Most gas detection equipment carries a UL-rated life expectancy of 10 to 12 years. Past that point sensors drift faster, replacement parts get scarce, and the system starts producing the two failure modes nobody wants: nuisance alarms that get ignored, and quiet failures that get missed.

We assess before we quote

The first visit is an assessment of what is actually in the building: panel model and support status, sensor age and whether each cell still holds calibration, wiring condition, ventilation interlocks, and whether the current layout matches how the garage is used today. You get a written recommendation with the reasoning, not a proposal to replace everything.

Three outcomes, and we will tell you which one you have

  • Service, not replacement. The system is sound and out of calibration. This is the most common finding.
  • Partial retrofit. Panel and wiring are fine, sensors are past life. Replace sensors, reprogram setpoints, keep the infrastructure.
  • Full replacement. The panel is unsupported or the layout no longer matches the building. Replace it, and take the opportunity to fix the sensor placement.

Why aging systems cost more than they look

An out-of-life system usually runs the exhaust fans harder than it needs to, because drifted sensors read high or because someone bypassed the controls to stop the nuisance alarms. Fans running continuously instead of 5 to 10 percent of the time is a real monthly number on the electricity bill, and it is the part of a retrofit that pays for itself.

Doing it without closing the garage

Retrofits happen in occupied buildings, level by level, with temporary coverage maintained. We schedule around tenants and parking demand rather than requiring a shutdown.

How long does a gas detection system last?

Gas detection equipment generally carries a UL-rated life expectancy of 10 to 12 years. Individual sensor cells are shorter, typically 2 to 7 years depending on model and environment.

Do we have to replace the whole system?

Often not. If the panel is supported and the wiring is sound, replacing sensors and updating the programming is usually the cheaper path. We tell you which case you are in before quoting.

How do we know our system is at end of life?

Sensors that will not hold calibration, parts that are no longer manufactured, repeated nuisance alarms and a panel that predates the current occupancy are the usual signs.

Can you match a system another company installed?

Yes. We service and retrofit most major manufacturers rather than requiring a rip-and-replace onto our own preferred brand.
